    1. Track Crawls were just added to the most recent release of SearchPatterns Pro Air (v2.3) and is currently available on the App Store. My blog is really out of date and I will update it shortly to include the more recent features and updated screenshots!
      Thanks for the question!

  2. Can I just enter search radius and #evolutions and will it give the pattern to fly and then track it with a bad elf gps on my IPad?

    1. I haven't tried external GPS units. I have no idea - I don't have access to an external unit. The internal GPS for cellular models works great.
You can export the pattern as a .GPX file that will work with other apps on the iPad (like Air Navigation Pro or MotionX GPS - both of which support external GPS units I believe). So there are ways around not having GPS not built into your iPad. You can also export the pattern for use on a laptop etc.
      Hope that answers your question.

    2. My question was more about the data entry process. I am not concerned about getting wind course corrections. I just want to see the pattern and fly it. can I just enter the Lat/Lon coordinates, and search pattern radius to see and fly the pattern? Especially with the Sector Search.

  3. I think this app is perfect... For aircraft. if you could only add in the option for a boat so we can have slow speeds and shorter distances there isn't really a need to make a whole new app if you could just "update" speeds And distances with the option to choose the units if measure like NM or yds. I have been waiting for the boat SAR app for a while now, how far on the horizon is it? I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival!!!!

    1. The SearchPatterns Pro Sea app should be live on the App Store sometime this week. It was submitted last week.
The differences include No Wind/Bingo calcs. But it includes a "Oil Field" pattern specific for marine use. It also has different variable limitations, for instance it would warn you if you enter a speed of 100kts.
Doing all the conversions for Yards right now is causing me difficulty so I have not implemented this. You can still enter decimal nautical miles (0.2 for example).

      Thanks for your support!

    2. I'm not sure what you mean by slow speeds and short distances, but I downloaded air pro and put in a sector search with .3 mile legs and got on my Bicycle and road around the block. It tracked my pattern perfectly. Then I e-mailed it and it printed very clearly?

    3. What I mean by slow speeds/short distances is that the app will warn you if you enter a number that is too large/small respectively (100kts for marine use is too large, 10kts for Air is too slow). It merely warns you of 'improper entries', it does not warn you about how fast you are actually going...

  4. do you plan on making this for Android?

    1. Eventually...? There's a lot of other features I want to focus on first, when I even have the time for that...
Haven't used the Android SDK. Once I get around to checking it out, then I would want to make it for Android, yes. But that will be a while...

    5. No promises yet, but I now own an Android device and hope to attempt development on Android soon. Baby steps first... lot of different things to learn, and time permitting!

  5. Do you need 3G or WiFi to display the maps or they can be downloaded into the ipad?
Can the pattern be exported to Foreflight to display on aviation maps?

    1. If you run the app while connected to the internet (3G/LTE/Wifi) and view the area you are going to fly to during the search, it will cache the area and the map data should still be available later when you fly as long as you don't close out of the app.
This is built-in caching functionality of iOS devices.
Regardless of the map data being there, you can still draw the pattern (on a blank background), follow your GPS signal on the pattern and track your breadcrumbs.

Patterns should be able to be exported to any app that can import .GPX files. I don't know of importing to ForeFlight. I DO know you can import the patterns very nicely into "Air Navigation Pro".

  6. Hi Adam, Great Work! Could you create an output with the coordinates compatible with Foreflight? I made a spreadsheet but it's nothing like the work you have done:

    1. Haven't had a chance to look at all this yet, but it sounds great! I didn't even know you could import coordinates into Foreflight.

  7. Let me second the cut&paste into foreflight. That would be really useful.

I am not sure that my review on itunes took so I am pasting it here.

There is no doubt that I am going to intigrate this app into my SAR operations. it has the key features and then some for doing a search pattern. if you tell it the wind direction it will even tell you the correct headings for each leg. and the ability to give you the heading to the Comence Search Point (CRP) will also help. Tho to tell the truth, the first place the CRP goes is in my planes GPS so that I can use the autopilot to get there.
there are couple of problems that need to get fixed (hence the 3 stars)
    1) you have to be in portrait mode to enter the pattern data. infact you have to have the ipad with the camera at the top. Once the data is entered landscape will only show the map but not the data entry fields. the fact that portait mode is fixed means that I can not have the iPad "upside down" in the plane. a problem as I keep the charging port at the top so taht the cable does not interfere with the ipad mount.
    2) there does not seem to be anyway to enter your current position into the CRP. you have to manually load the coordinates. what is worse is that your current coordinates are covered by the little keyboard when you try to manually enter your position in the CRP fields.
    3) the little keyboard is to little. in a small plane at 1000 feet you can be bumped around pretty good in the thermals. hitting the right number is a challenge. at least double their size. cover the map if you have to, you don't need it till you hit return anyway.

    1. Hoping to get back to work on the app soon.
The portrait orientation and marked position as CSP are my first two priorities! No promises on timeline, but they are both highly requested additions!
Keyboard for the iPhone and/or iPad is too small?

  8. Hi! We're tinkering with your app along with EarthNC's marine navigation charts and Foreflight Pro. With Charts, I see it listed in the export menus, but I always get an error Import Failed using either the Pattern or Track options. Foreflight Pro does not show up at all and I can't figure out if Foreflight can manually import GPX files. -M

  9. Just an update. I think there's an issue with EarthNC Charts import function. I was able to export SAR Pro Air GPX into online viewers. With Earth NC Charts, I tried to export a route to GPX and re-import it, and it failed to import it's own GPX! Also, it seems with Foreflight, the closest thing I could find to importing a route is importing user waypoints via CSV or KML. Would KML be a possibility in SAR Pro Air's future? -M

  10. How do you add more waypoints to the track search?

  11. USCGAUX Love your app. We need android version for sure.

  12. How can we add more than one waypoint for track crawl. IPhone app show only the possibility of one waypoint. Your IPAD version show more than one waypoint but when we use the iPhone app it show only one.

  13. Hello Adam,

does SearchPatterns Pro Air work with ios 9 ? Do you plan any further development ?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hello Adam,
have had problems trying to export the search pattern for other applications such as Pro Air Nav . What happens is that the exported gpx file appears in all other applications as if they had not marked waypoints, and how the problem occurs in various applications I tested , I believe it is an error in exportacao . Would you help me?

  18. Will there be an update to support iOS 11 ?

    ReplyDelete
  19. As many of you know or are figuring out, the app no longer works with iOS 11 because it is a 32bit app. I plan on rewriting everything from scratch and getting a new version out as soon as I can. I am finishing up the new ColdAltitude app and will soon start developing a new SearchPatternsPro app. It will take some time as I have to learn everything as I go and find the time to do all this. I appreciate your patience and support!
